Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Armenia?

Tap water in Yerevan is drinkable and sourced from deep mountain springs, but caution is advised elsewhere in Armenia, where aging Soviet-era pipes and inconsistent treatment can compromise water quality.

Water Source

Armenia’s water originates from mountain springs, rivers, and Lake Sevan — the country’s largest freshwater body. Yerevan’s supply comes largely from the Aparan and Azat reservoirs and deep artesian wells via the Yerevan Jur distribution network. Smaller cities rely on older gravity-fed systems from mountain sources.

Contaminants & Concerns

Yerevan’s water is generally clean at the source, with low bacterial counts. However, Soviet-era distribution pipes in many towns suffer from corrosion, leaks, and cross-contamination with sewage lines. In mining regions near Kajaran and Kapan, trace heavy metals from tailings can enter local water sources.

Regional Variations

Yerevan has the most reliable supply, with spring-fed water that many residents drink untreated. Gyumri and Vanadzor have functional treatment but aging pipes that reduce reliability at the tap. Rural villages in Syunik and Tavush provinces often depend on untreated spring water of variable quality.

Water Hardness

Moderate, typically 100–200 mg/L in Yerevan; harder in areas drawing from limestone aquifers in the south..

Do Locals Drink Tap Water?

In Yerevan, most residents drink tap water and spring water directly and take pride in its quality. Outside the capital, boiling and bottled water are more common.

Tips for Travelers

  • Yerevan’s pulpulaks (public drinking fountains) are fed by mountain springs and safe to drink
  • In Gyumri and other cities, let the tap run before drinking or use a filter
  • Carry bottled water when traveling in mining regions of southern Armenia
  • Ask locally about water quality in small villages

Recommended Precautions

  • Use filtered or bottled water outside Yerevan
  • Avoid tap water near active mining zones in Syunik Province
