Reading the Map

Of the 205 countries and territories rated, 84 are places where visitors can normally drink from the tap (40 Safe, 44 Generally Safe) and 121 are places where bottled, boiled, or filtered water is the better choice (51 Caution, 70 Not Safe).

The pattern follows infrastructure more than geography. Water leaving a treatment plant is often fine; what separates the green countries from the red ones is whether the pipe network holds constant pressure. Where supply is intermittent, pipes lose pressure, and contaminated groundwater is drawn in through leaks before the water reaches the tap.

A country's color is a national summary. Large countries vary by region and between cities and rural areas, so open the country guide for regional detail, or see the breakdown by region: Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa, Oceania, Middle East.
