Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Pakistan?

Pakistan draws water from the Indus River system and its tributaries (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej), supplemented by groundwater from deep and shallow tube wells. Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority operates the Simly Dam and Khanpur Dam supply systems. Lahore relies almost entirely on groundwater from over 500 WASA tube wells.

Bacterial contamination is the primary concern — fecal coliforms are detected in 60–70% of piped supply samples nationwide due to sewage intrusion through cracked pipes. Arsenic in groundwater affects parts of Punjab and Sindh. Industrial effluent from leather tanneries near Kasur and textile mills in Faisalabad pollutes surface water sources.

Islamabad has the most reliable infrastructure but is not fully safe at the tap. Lahore’s groundwater-based supply faces rapid aquifer depletion and arsenic hotspots. Karachi experiences chronic shortages and severely contaminated supply from the Hub Dam and Indus River systems. Rural Sindh and Balochistan have the poorest access and quality.
