Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Uganda?

Tap water in Uganda, including Kampala, is not safe to drink directly from the tap without treatment. While the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) treats water to reasonable standards at source, distribution network contamination and inconsistent supply mean boiling or bottled water is recommended.

Water Source

Kampala's water is drawn from Lake Victoria via the Gaba treatment plants, operated by NWSC, one of the more capable utilities in the region, while other major towns like Jinja and Entebbe also draw from Lake Victoria and the Nile as it exits the lake. Rural areas rely heavily on boreholes, protected springs, and rainwater harvesting, particularly in the drier Karamoja region in the northeast.

Contaminants & Concerns

Post-treatment recontamination is the primary concern, driven by aging pipes, intermittent pressure allowing backflow, and informal settlement connections around Kampala's rapidly growing peri-urban areas. Lake Victoria itself faces pollution pressure from agricultural runoff, industrial discharge, and invasive water hyacinth, complicating source water treatment.

Regional Variations

Kampala and Jinja have the most developed treatment infrastructure via NWSC, while northern and northeastern regions, including Karamoja, face significant water scarcity and rely on unprotected sources with much higher contamination risk, especially during dry seasons.

Water Hardness

Lake Victoria-sourced water in Kampala is moderately hard, typically around 100–180 mg/L, while groundwater from boreholes in the northeast can be harder due to different underlying geology..

Do Locals Drink Tap Water?

Urban residents commonly boil tap water or purchase bottled and sachet water, with brands like Rwenzori widely trusted, while rural communities depend on boiled well or spring water where fuel allows.

Tips for Travelers

  • Boil or filter tap water even in Kampala before drinking
  • Drink bottled water such as Rwenzori or Aqua Fresh in hotels and restaurants
  • Avoid tap water entirely in rural northern Uganda without treatment
  • Use water purification tablets when trekking in areas like Bwindi or Kidepo

Recommended Precautions

  • Avoid ice from informal vendors outside established restaurants
  • Store boiled or filtered water in clean, covered containers to prevent recontamination
