Water Hardness Explained: What mg/L Actually Means
Water hardness is simply the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium, expressed as milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). Under 60 mg/L is soft and over 180 mg/L is very hard — and while hardness changes how water tastes and how fast your kettle scales up, the WHO finds no harmful health effects at any level found in drinking water.
The Scale: From Soft to Very Hard
The standard classification, used by the USGS and echoed on every city page on this site, divides hardness into four bands measured as mg/L of calcium carbonate equivalent:
- Soft: 0–60 mg/L
- Moderately hard: 61–120 mg/L
- Hard: 121–180 mg/L
- Very hard: more than 180 mg/L
You'll also see hardness quoted in other units: German degrees (°dH, 1 °dH ≈ 17.8 mg/L), French degrees (°fH, 1 °fH = 10 mg/L), and grains per gallon in the US water-softener industry (1 gpg ≈ 17.1 mg/L). They all measure the same thing — total dissolved calcium and magnesium — just on different rulers.
Where Hardness Comes From: Geology
Hardness is a fingerprint of the rock your water traveled through. Rain falls essentially mineral-free, then picks up calcium and magnesium as it percolates through limestone, chalk, gypsum, and dolomite. Regions sitting on carbonate rock — southeast England, much of the Mediterranean, the central United States, northern France — have hard to very hard water. Regions drawing on granite catchments, glacial melt, or surface reservoirs in igneous terrain — Scotland, Scandinavia, Iceland, the US Pacific Northwest — have soft water.
This is why hardness varies so much within a single country, and why it's largely immune to treatment choices: municipal plants disinfect and filter, but most don't remove dissolved minerals, because there's no health reason to.
Health: A Non-Issue (Possibly Even a Small Positive)
The WHO's assessment is unambiguous: there is no evidence of adverse health effects from drinking hard water, and no health-based guideline value is set for hardness. Calcium and magnesium are nutrients — a liter of very hard water can contribute a modest but real share of daily magnesium intake, and some epidemiological studies have associated harder water with slightly lower cardiovascular mortality, though the evidence isn't strong enough for the WHO to call it protective.
Hard water is frequently blamed for kidney stones, dry skin, and hair damage. The kidney stone link is not supported for typical drinking-water hardness. The skin and hair effects are real but external — hard water reacts with soap to leave residue — and cosmetic rather than medical. If a website or salesperson tells you hard water is dangerous to drink, they are selling something.
What Hardness Actually Affects: Taste, Scale, and Soap
Taste: minerals carry flavor. Moderately hard water tends to taste rounded and pleasant — many bottled mineral waters are deliberately hard — while very soft water can taste flat and very hard water chalky. Coffee and tea brewing have sweet spots around 50–150 mg/L; specialty coffee associations publish target ranges because extraction chemistry genuinely depends on mineral content.
Limescale: heating hard water precipitates calcium carbonate — the white crust in kettles, on shower heads, and inside boilers and dishwashers. Scale shortens appliance life and reduces heating efficiency; this, not health, is the real cost of hard water.
Soap: calcium binds with soap to form scum, so hard water lathers poorly and leaves films on skin, glassware, and laundry. Detergent doses on packaging often list separate amounts for hard and soft water for exactly this reason.
Softening: When It's Worth It
Ion-exchange water softeners swap calcium and magnesium for sodium, protecting pipes and appliances in very hard areas. They're a plumbing investment, not a health one — and softened water's added sodium (modest, but nonzero) plus its corrosivity mean many installers deliberately leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened for drinking and cooking. Cheaper alternatives for renters and travelers: descale kettles with citric acid or vinegar, use dishwasher salt, and accept that the shower screen will need wiping.
