Overview
Florida is groundwater country: the Floridan and Biscayne aquifers supply most of the state's roughly 1,600 community systems, including Miami-Dade, Orlando, and Jacksonville. Aquifer water is naturally filtered through limestone, and the big utilities meet all federal standards.
The limestone geology also defines the problems: hydrogen sulfide taste and odor, hardness, and disinfection byproducts formed when organic-rich groundwater is chlorinated (Jacksonville and Tampa manage the state's most watched trihalomethane levels). Saltwater intrusion pushes coastal utilities to deepen or relocate wells, and PFAS shows up near bases and airports.
