Water Source

100% reverse-osmosis desalinated seawater drawn from deep wells drilled into limestone bedrock. Two entities supply Grand Cayman: Cayman Water (subsidiary of Consolidated Water Co., NASDAQ: CWCO) serves Seven Mile Beach and West Bay (~5,500 connections); Water Authority–Cayman (government statutory body) serves the rest of Grand Cayman via four RO plants, plus one RO plant on Cayman Brac.

Contaminants & Concerns

No significant contamination concerns. Sodium is approximately 100 mg/L, free chlorine residual ~0.25 ppm. Food-grade sodium hydroxide adjusts pH to just above 7, and zinc orthophosphate inhibits pipe corrosion. The water is fluoride-free. Deep-well extraction avoids open-seawater contaminants entirely.

Regional Variations

Grand Cayman has full piped RO desalinated water across the island — safe and potable. Cayman Brac has piped water on the western end and north coast from one Water Authority RO plant; other areas are served by water trucks. Little Cayman has no Water Authority operations — residents rely on rainwater catchment and small private RO plants.

Water Hardness

Very soft, roughly 10–50 mg/L, typical of RO-desalinated water..

Do Locals Drink Tap Water?

Despite safety assurances, the 2010 census found 79% of households purchase bottled water, more from cultural habit than safety concerns. Local tourism authorities actively campaign for visitors to choose tap water over bottled.

Tips for Travelers

  • On Grand Cayman, tap water is safe to drink with no special precautions needed
  • On Little Cayman, ask your accommodation about their water source and consider bottled water
  • The water is very soft due to RO treatment, which can cause rusty discoloration from corroded metal plumbing in older buildings — let the tap run briefly if discolored

Recommended Precautions

On Little Cayman, do not assume tap water is treated — ask your accommodation about their source
