Tap Water Safety in Europe

Europe has the most consistently safe tap water of any continent, anchored by the EU Drinking Water Directive — one of the strictest water quality frameworks in the world. Nearly all of Western, Northern, and Central Europe is safe to drink from the tap. The picture is more mixed in parts of the Balkans and Eastern Europe, where aging Soviet-era infrastructure can compromise well-treated water on its way to the tap.
